Towering above the lush alpine meadows of Juta, the Chaukhi Massif stands like a stone crown over the Kazbegi region. This guided trek takes you across one of the most spectacular passes in the Caucasus — Chaukhi Pass (3341 m) — connecting the well-known beauty of Juta with the hidden wildness of Khevsureti.
This is a point-to-point hike that starts in the tranquil village of Juta and finishes in the remote highland hamlet of Roshka. Along the way, you’ll pass wild rivers, dramatic peaks, and the Abudelauri Lakes, famous for their surreal colors. It’s a raw, beautiful journey through some of Georgia’s most impressive terrain — perfect for hikers looking for a full day of challenge, views, and solitude.
This tour can be done in 1 long day or extended into 2 days with a night spent camping by the lakes or staying in a guesthouse in Roshka.
Chaukhi Massif – Hike beneath the iconic seven towers of Chaukhi, Georgia’s answer to the Dolomites
Chaukhi Pass (3341m) – Cross one of Georgia’s most beautiful and remote mountain passes
Abudelauri Lakes – Visit three stunning alpine lakes, each with a different color: green, blue, and white
Roshka Stones – See ancient glacial boulders scattered across the valley floor like a scene from a legend
Village-to-Village Traverse – Start in picturesque Juta and finish in the mysterious and remote Roshka
Optional Camping – For the 2-day version, sleep near the lakes under the stars for a wilder experience
Full Logistics Support – All transport, route planning, and guidance handled by our local team
Due to its elevation and exposure, Chaukhi Pass is only accessible from July to late September. Earlier in the season, snow may block the route. Here’s a breakdown:
Early July – First accessible days, lots of snow patches but beautiful conditions
Mid-July to September – Best time to hike: dry trail, clear views, and wildflower meadows
October – Possible if weather holds, but prepare for cold and snow
⚠️ The trail is not accessible in winter/spring due to deep snow and avalanche risk.
No technical climbing or mountaineering skills are required for the Juta to Roshka hike, but this is not a beginner’s trail. You should have prior experience with full-day hikes in mountainous terrain. The trail involves a steady ascent to 3341 meters and a long descent over uneven ground, including loose rock and alpine meadows. It’s a great choice for hikers who are confident on variable terrain and looking to go beyond marked tourist paths. If you’ve done full-day hikes of 15–20 km before, you’ll be well prepared. A local guide is included to ensure safety and navigation, especially important in foggy conditions or early season snow.
This hike demands a solid level of physical fitness. The route includes over 1200 meters of elevation gain and takes 8–9 hours of moving time. You should be comfortable hiking for a full day with short breaks, carrying your own pack with water and layers. For those doing the 2-day camping option, you’ll need to carry additional gear or request a packhorse in advance. If you regularly hike, run, or do endurance sports, this trail will challenge you without overwhelming. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to suggest warm-up hikes or offer a shortened custom route.
