Experience Recommended

This 5-day trek Through Svaneti covers approximately 75 kilometers (46 miles) of varied terrain, including mountain passes, forest trails, and alpine meadows. It’s recommended for trekkers with a good level of physical fitness and some experience with multi-day hikes. While previous experience in mountainous regions is ideal, it’s not essential if you are prepared for moderate to challenging terrain.

Fitness Level Recommended

  • Fitness Level: You should be comfortable with hiking 6-8 hours daily, often on uneven and sometimes steep terrain. A good level of cardiovascular fitness, balance, and endurance will ensure you fully enjoy each day’s trek.

  • Previous Trekking Experience: Some experience with multi-day hiking and carrying a day pack is helpful. While you won’t need advanced mountaineering skills, being familiar with basic hiking practices, such as pacing and managing energy, will make this trek enjoyable.

  • Mental Preparedness: Svaneti’s trails can be remote, and the mountain weather is changeable. A sense of adventure, adaptability, and preparedness for different weather conditions will enhance your experience.

Trekking in Svaneti Itinerary

Day 1

Upon landing at Kutaisi International Airport, you will be met by your host, who will facilitate your transfer to a nearby hotel. Once you have checked in and settled, you may take the opportunity to relax and prepare for the exciting adventure that awaits.

Day 2

After breakfast, you’ll begin your drive from Kutaisi to Mazeri, a journey of about 4-5 hours. Enjoy the beautiful views of the Caucasus Mountains and the surrounding valleys along the way. There will be chances to stop for photos of the stunning scenery and local villages. Once you arrive in Mazeri, check into your guesthouse and take some time to explore this charming village.

Day 3

After breakfast, embark on a scenic hike from Mestia to Shugra Waterfall, which takes approximately 3-4 hours. As you trek along the picturesque trail, enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Upon reaching the waterfall, take time to admire its impressive cascade and the tranquil natural setting, perfect for capturing memorable photos. On the descent, meet the local transport, which will drive you back to the guesthouse to pick up your luggage. From there, you’ll continue your journey, transferring to the town of Mestia, where you’ll settle in for an overnight stay.

Day 4

On this day we’ll set off early after a hearty breakfast, trekking towards Zhabeshi, which is about 10-12 kilometers away. The trail takes us through lush forests and picturesque villages, offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains Tetnuldi (4858m) and Gistola 4860m) and lush valleys. Along the way, we’l pause for a packed lunch in a scenic spot to recharge. As we arrive in Zhabeshi, you’ll experience the warmth of local hospitality in a cozy guesthouse. In the evening, you can relax and share stories with your fellow trekkers while enjoying a delicious dinner prepared with local ingredients.

Day 5

On this day, we’ll set out after breakfast for our trek to Adishi, covering approximately 14-16 kilometers. The trail leads us through enchanting forests and meadows, with panoramic views of the majestic Caucasus peaks. Along the way, we’ll encounter the fascinating Svan towers and traditional stone houses, providing insight into the local culture. We’ll take a leisurely lunch break, enjoying the serene surroundings before continuing our hike. After arriving in Adishi, we’ll check into a local guesthouse.

Day 6

After breakfast, we’ll embark on the next leg of our trek towards Iprali, approximately 20 kilometers away. The journey begins with a scenic ascent, providing breathtaking views of the Adishi Glacier and surrounding peaks. As we navigate the rugged terrain, we’ll cross streams and meander through lush valleys, immersing ourselves in the stunning landscape. We’ll stop for lunch along the way, taking in the beauty of our surroundings. Upon arrival in prali, we’ll check into a local guesthouse, where you can relax and enjoy a hearty dinner while sharing tales of the day’s adventures

Day 7

On the final day, we’ll trek the last stretch from prali to Ushguli, covering about 10 kilometers. This relatively shorter trek allows us to enjoy a leisurely pace as we make our way to one of the highest inhabited villages in Europe. The trail will offer breathtaking views of the Shkhara Glacier and the unique stone architecture of Ushguli. Once we arrive, you’ll have time to explore the village, visiting the ancient churches and soaking in the stunning surroundings. After our exploration, we’ll arrange transportation back to Mestia, or you may choose to extend your stay in Ushquli for further adventures. This trek from Mestia tc Ushguli promises unforgettable memories, stunning landscapes, and a deeper appreciation for the rich culture and natural beauty of Svaneti.

Day 8

we’ll enjoy breakfast before taking a scenic drive back to Mestia. From there, we’ll travel to Kutaisi, which takes about 6-7 hours. Upon arrival, you’re free to explore the city at your own pace! Visit the stunning Bagrati Cathedral, the Gelati Monastery, and the Colchis Fountain, or wander through the local markets.
