Georgia by Bike: Mountains, Villages & the Black Sea

Georgia is a country best experienced slowly. Away from the main tourist routes, the landscape changes dramatically within just a few hours — from the historic streets of Tbilisi, through vast highland plateaus and remote mountain villages, over spectacular passes and finally down to the warm shores of the Black Sea.

This cycling adventure is designed to experience that incredible variety from the saddle.

Over the course of a week, we’ll ride across some of Georgia’s most diverse landscapes, combining challenging mountain roads, gravel tracks, quiet rural routes and long descents. Along the way, we’ll visit ancient monasteries, medieval fortresses and remarkable sites such as Vardzia and Rabati, while travelling through villages where traditional Georgian life is still very much part of everyday life.

But this trip is about more than the cycling.

Georgia is famous for its hospitality, and food, wine and long conversations around the table are an important part of the journey. We’ll stay in locally run guesthouses, eat regional dishes and meet people along the way, giving you a chance to experience the country beyond its famous landmarks.

The route also takes us through the changing landscapes of southern Georgia and into the lush mountains of Adjara, where we cross the legendary Goderdzi Pass before descending towards Batumi and the Black Sea.

There will be tough climbs, rough roads and long days in the saddle — but also quiet mountain roads, incredible views, rewarding descents and plenty of moments to stop and take it all in.

If you’re looking for a cycling trip that combines adventure, culture, food and some of Georgia’s most spectacular scenery, we invite you to join us on the road from Tbilisi to the Black Sea.

Experience Recommended

This is an adventurous, physically demanding cycling tour designed for riders with a good level of fitness and previous experience riding on both paved and gravel roads.

The route includes rough gravel, broken asphalt and some challenging sections, so confidence riding on variable surfaces is important.

You do not need to be an elite cyclist, but you should be accustomed to consecutive days of riding and be prepared for some demanding mountain stages. The longest climbs can be physically challenging, with gradients reaching 12% or more.

Fitness Levels recommended

You should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable cycling for several hours a day, including sustained climbs and long descents.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Tbilisi and check into your hotel in the historic Old Town. If you arrive with enough time, take the opportunity to walk around the city and discover some of its most interesting historic streets, landmarks and architecture.

In the evening, meet your guide and the rest of the group for a trip briefing. You’ll go through the route, logistics and everything you need to know for the days ahead. Afterwards, enjoy your first dinner together at a traditional Georgian restaurant and get your first taste of local cuisine.

Day 2

After preparing the bikes, we leave Tbilisi early and head towards Tetritskaro. The ride starts on paved roads before gradually becoming rougher as we make our way down towards the Ktsia River.

Following the river, the route continues onto gravel and begins a demanding climb towards Dashbashi Canyon. Once we reach the canyon, there will be time to stop, enjoy the surroundings and have lunch.

From here, we continue across the wide and exposed Javakheti Plateau. The landscape becomes increasingly remote and open.

Along the way, we’ll visit a historic convent where you can sample locally made  chacha, Georgia’s traditional grape spirit. We then continue to our guesthouse for the evening, where a homemade dinner.

Day 3

Today’s route begins with an easier ride along paved roads towards Lake Saghamo. Surrounded by mountains and open countryside, the lake provides a beautiful start to the day.

As we approach Akhalkalaki, we turn towards Kartsebi and leave the main road behind. The terrain changes quickly as we enter a fantastic gravel descent.

The route eventually brings us to Vardzia, one of the most remarkable historical sites in southern Georgia. Carved directly into the mountainside, this enormous cave complex dates back to the medieval period and is closely connected with Queen Tamar.

We’ll have time to explore the ancient tunnels, chambers and cave dwellings while learning about the site’s fascinating history.

After exploring Vardzia, we settle in for the evening and enjoy another traditional Georgian dinner.

Day 4

Today we leave the larger towns behind and ride through a series of small villages and rural landscapes. Keep an eye out for the powerful Caucasian sheepdogs and the semi-nomadic shepherds who still move their flocks through this region.

From Aspindza, the route becomes more demanding as we climb towards Chobareti. Some sections reach gradients of more than 12%, making this one of the tougher climbs of the trip.

The effort is rewarded with a long and enjoyable descent towards Akhaltsikhe. Once in the city, we’ll visit Rabati Castle, an impressive historic complex that reflects the many cultures and religions that have shaped this part of Georgia.

The fortress complex includes an Orthodox church, mosque, synagogue, Catholic church and the main citadel, making it one of the country’s most interesting historical sites.

Day 5

Today is one of the major stages of the adventure as we cross the spectacular Goderdzi Pass.

We gradually climb through dense green forests into the Adjara Mountains. As we gain altitude, the scenery opens up and the views become increasingly impressive. At the pass, take some time to enjoy the panoramic mountain landscape before continuing towards Green Lake.

We’ll stop here for lunch and, depending on the conditions and your mood, there may be an opportunity for a swim in the clear mountain water.

From Green Lake, the character of the ride changes completely. A long descent of around 30 km takes us down through the mountains towards our accommodation.

With the biggest climb of the trip behind us, the evening is all about relaxing, enjoying a home-cooked dinner and experiencing Georgian hospitality. Your host may offer some homemade chacha and introduce you to the Georgian tradition of making a proper toast.

Day 6

Our final riding day takes us from the mountains towards the Black Sea and the city of Batumi.

After a hearty Adjarian-style breakfast, we transfer to the village of Erge, where we begin cycling. The route immediately starts gaining elevation as we climb towards several viewpoints overlooking Batumi.

From the top, the contrast between the green mountains and the Black Sea coastline creates some of the most memorable views of the trip. After taking some time to enjoy the scenery, we begin a long descent towards Batumi.

The ride finishes on Batumi Boulevard, right beside the Black Sea. Once we arrive, the rest of the afternoon is free to enjoy the city. Swim in the sea, relax at the hotel or explore Batumi’s waterfront and old town.

In the evening, we come together for a final Georgian dinner and celebrate the end of the journey.

Day 7

After breakfast, we load the bikes and begin the journey back to Tbilisi by vehicle. We’ll make a stop for lunch along the way before continuing to the capital.

Depending on your flight time, we’ll then transfer you to Tbilisi International Airport for your journey home.

If you prefer to extend your stay in Batumi instead of returning to Tbilisi, this can also be arranged. Additional nights and recommendations for exploring the region can be provided on request.
