Catskiing in Bakhmaro: Georgia’s Ultimate Winter Adventure

Catskiing in Bakhmaro promises an extraordinary adventure, inviting you to carve through awe-inspiring landscapes, untouched blankets of virgin snow, and backcountry terrain that will set your heart racing with exhilaration. Bakhmaro, which is typically a vibrant and lively mountain resort in the summer, becomes completely abandoned in the winter. Residents flee their wooden houses from the heavy snowfall each year, making way for deep snow chasers and alpine adventurists traveling to experience Catskiing in Georgia.

In winter ghost town becomes covered in 4-7 meters of snow, leaving just the roofs of the cabins to peak out from below. Uninhabited and free of tourist infrastructure, Bakhmaro is the ultimate Catskiing in Georgia destination, entirely free of ski-lifts or ski resorts. To reach this winter paradise, you need to take a snowcat from the bottom, as the snow barricades regular cars and 4×4’s out from the village.

There are endless variations and ranges of deep powder lines to be discovered and pioneered by those with the adventure spirit.

Because of our access to  catski, opportunities are endless here in Bakhmaro. On low visibility storm days, you can except to take the snowcat up and drop into majestic pine tree forests. When the storm clears, the snowcat takes us up beyond the treeline to drop into the most desirable lines and pristine alpine bowls.  No matter what the weather conditions present, you’ll be able to enjoy full days of freeriding adventures.

Experience Recommended

Required Experience for Catskiing

At The Alpine Project, we strive to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests. Catskiing in Bakhmaro is an exhilarating adventure, but it requires a certain level of skiing ability and experience. To ensure everyone has a fantastic time, we ask that our clients meet the following experience criteria:

  1. Intermediate to Advanced Skiing Ability: Clients should be proficient skiers, capable of navigating varied snow conditions and terrains. You should be comfortable skiing on ungroomed slopes, which may include powder, crust, and variable snow.

  2. Off-Piste Experience: Prior experience in off-piste skiing is essential. Clients should be familiar with the techniques necessary to handle unmarked and backcountry terrain. If you have participated in other off-piste or freeride skiing activities, this will enhance your enjoyment and safety during the trip.

  3. Physical Fitness: Catskiing can be physically demanding. Clients should be in good physical condition, with the stamina to ski multiple runs in a day, often at higher altitudes. Regular cardiovascular exercise and strength training are recommended to prepare for the adventure.

  4. Avalanche Awareness: While we provide guidance and safety equipment, it’s crucial that clients have a basic understanding of avalanche safety and terrain assessment. Previous training or courses in avalanche awareness will significantly enhance your safety and enjoyment on the slopes.

  5. Equipment Familiarity: Clients should be comfortable with their skiing equipment, including skis, boots, and safety gear (avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe). If you’re renting equipment, ensure you are familiar with its operation and use.

If you are unsure whether you meet these criteria or have questions about your suitability for catskiing, please feel free to contact us. Our guides are happy to discuss your experience and help you prepare for an unforgettable adventure in Bakhmaro!
